Bob and Bill

This blog is dedicated to creativity. I know that. I made the thing. But I must divert away from creativity for one blog post. Just one, I promise. And I have a very good reason.

Monday, Serena and I bought a brand new desktop computer. Tuesday, I broke it. Actually, no. I did not break it. The floor attacked it. It tried to commit suicide. Gravity and my computer were locked in a death match that was too close to call until... gravity won. Whichever way your cookie crumbles, so did my hard drive.

But let me start at the beginning.

We will call the computer Bob in order to eliminate confusion and limit the amount of times I type "my computer." So Bob was sitting on top of a small desk with wheels, next to Bill, the monitor. Christina was sitting in a chair with wheels (most computer chairs come with them these days) and was scooting backwards, pulling said desk (and Bob and Bill) along with her. She could not have been going any slower than she was or being any more careful than she was. She is not to blame here. Remember, gravity. Gravity is at fault. But I digress.

Scooting backwards. Slowly. Carefully. Probably should have moved Bob so he wasn't perched so close to the edge of the desk, but hindsight's 20/20. Christina stops. So does the desk. So does Bob. So does Bill. Everything's in order until out of the corner of Christina's eye... gravity strikes again.

Top-heavy Bob (in slow motion) falls *CRASH* onto the cement floor and begins to moan *BEEP BEEP BEEEEP* Christina's heart stops and she begins to entreat Bob to stay with her.

"It's okay, baby. You're fine, you're okay... please... please."

To no avail. All but sparks were spurting from the machine. Eventually, that awful black screen of death with the white typewriter-style words were all Christina could see.

She calls the manufacturer:
"This is Tom from HP, how can I help you with your computer today?"
"Umm yes, I just did something stupid. My computer fell and now it's beeping and not starting up."
"Okay..."
"Did I just break my computer?"
"Well... you might have."

Screams of agony ensue. Okay, not really. Actually what happened is quite a miracle because when I (it's me, Christina, no longer in 3rd person) called Office Depot (where I bought the wretched eloper) they said they couldn't return the computer if I had damaged it, but they would make an exception for me.So, they gave me a brand new computer along with all the virus protection and all that in exchange for the dead one. Isn't that wonderful?

It was definitely the Lord watching over me and my stupidity. As I stood, staring at my dying desktop, literally thinking, "That did not just happen," I remembered the need to have faith in all things. Even if I hadn't gotten the exchange and had to eat $600, I would need to be okay with that. It's part of holding everything with open hands.

So I am very, very, very thankful. And Bill is too, although Bob seems different, Bill says.
